Book Review: Finding Peace

 Agency is a gift from our Heavenly Father, but sometimes it is not always used for good.  As children grow up, and make choices, we don't always agree with them.  In this encouraging book, a wealth of advice is given, for keeping your family strong.  Also, advice for when to take action, and when to be still.  The scriptures, modern day revelation, and insights from "seasoned" parents are a big part of the book.  This is a great book to read for leaders in the youth organization, parents, and family of people that have make other choices. 

I enjoyed the 6th chapter that talked about some of the things to do to heal from someone exercising their agency.  One of them is assuming that you will be sad for the rest of your life.  Since that is not really an option, you have to realize that you can control your own emotions, that time will heal the hurt, and the other persons actions don't have to determine your mood forever.  Then to realize that holding onto sadness doesn't make a lot of sense, because life has so much to be happy about.

She had only 1 French item.  2.  She had a tight budget.  3. She had no clue what made French design.  As she worked and studied, she gained a wealth of knowledge, that is so freely shared in this amazing book!  Most of the ideas are very affordable.  This great book is a resource to change your home from ordinary to EXTRAORDINARY!

Book Review: When Beauty is a Beast

C.C. Sorensen is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and has served in many positions on both the ward and stake level. “When Beauty Is a Beast” grew out of Sorensen’s many years of counseling husbands and wives who were struggling with various relationship issues.

Reidhead Randomness:

When Beauty is a Beast is an interesting book.  In this book, written for women, it has many stories and examples of how women sabotage their marriages.  While it is written with a gospel-centered approach, I felt a little "bashed" by it.  I have been mulling over it, to see if it is just that "the guilty take the truth to be hard," but I felt quite picked on as a female.  It talks about how to avoid controlling your spouse, transferring blame, setting unreasonable expectations, and how to avoid all the different kinds of abuse.  It shares how to build up your husband, boyfriend, fiance, etc. instead of tearing them down.  There are lots of quotes from general authorities and from the scriptures that relate to marriage and relationships in general, that I found useful.  There were some tidbits that were also helpful, and I found that I have been guilty, here and there, of things discussed in the book, but I feel that marriage is a give and take, and this book points out all the bad things women do, without mentioning that husbands also are guilty of different things....but I guess that would be a whole different book.  Unless a woman is ready to change, I think this book would just be offensive, and put a woman on the defense, or make her feel bad...and there is a "disclaimer" at the back of the book that basically says if you are reading this book to improve your relationship, you need to be careful about taking things personally.  It does implore the women reading the book to set aside your pride, and do some soul searching.  I am sure all women are guilty of something from this book, sometime in their lives, but I guess I felt it too be a little to harsh of a woman bashing.  Overall, it made me grateful for my wonderful, patient, loving husband!

I wish this was made of waterproof paper...because it had me drooling.  The fun cookbook will inspire even the most uncreative people to have a fun holiday party!  The first section is Halloween that is overflowing with hauntingly tempting treats, appetizers and main dishes.  Next up is Thanksgiving.  This isn't your traditional Thanksgiving meal...it includes many recipes that would be great fall food!  It also has a great section to inspire the using up of leftovers from Thanksgiving.  The grand finale is Christmas.  This section covers Breakfast & Brunch, Appetizers, Entrees, and Sides.  The last chapter in the Christmas section is "Gifts from the Kitchen."  What a glorious way to finish off the book!  It is loaded with wonderful treats and goodies that will have your neighbors requesting your recipe!  Each recipe has a picture, as well as the prep time and cook time...so you know what your getting into.  I LOVE this book!  It can springboard you into being a party hosting expert!

In Call to Arms: Nations Fall the exciting story continues from The Gathering: End's Beginning (the previous book, although both books can be read as stand alone stories).  The story is set in the not too distant future where the world is descending into chaos.  What will that be like?  This intense story line gives us a glimpse of what may happen.  The end of the book comes too quickly and leaves you with plenty to think about.  While you ponder, there are a few thought provoking questions at the back of the book.  One of the questions to chew on is "What item or activity could you not leave behind or give up?"

It is quite the adventure!  It would be a good read for a book club because of the great discussions this book could evoke!

Book Review: Flim Flam & Other Such Gobbledygook

Funny words from the title are only a few of the chuckle inducing phrases in this fun story.  The rhyme and rhythm, with darling, colorful pictures bring this story to life!  The book shares a great message about being friends with everyone....no matter the differences you have.  It helps to teach kids to appreciate differences, and uniqueness. 

My favorite line comes from the end of the book:  "...instead of unkindness, Choose niceness and see...exactly how joyful the barnyard can be!"

(At the end of the story, there is a glossary....since there are lots of FUNNY words and phrases!)

It's a SUPER fun book!

Missionaries need to eat.  PERIOD.  Sometimes they get fed by members in the ward, but sometimes they will fend for themselves...

When Mr. Reidhead Randomness was on his mission, he concocted a meal that makes me cringe!  It went something like this:

"I took a box of Idaho instant potato flakes, and made mashed potatoes.  Those tasted like cardboard (probably because they had been sitting in the cupboard for years), so I thought I would fry them up.  They still tasted yucky, so I looked in the fridge to see what other condiments I could add.  I found a bottle of BBQ sauce and added it.  That made it semi-palatable."

I am sure he is not alone in the "strange concoctions."  The Hungry Missionary is a great beginner cookbook of all the favorite foods from home...that they probably didn't learn to make while they were at home.  They are pretty easy to make, and can be made with little prior cooking experience.  All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) are covered, as well as Soups, breads, side dishes, salads, and cookies.  At the back is an equivalents reference section, as well as plenty of blank pages to fill with recipes you find along your journey.  

 

As you probably know, I homeschool my kids.  I am considering this as a basic cooking class "textbook" for this year.  The instructions are clear enough, that I would trust my 11 and 12 year old daughters to make any of the recipes from this book!

 

This is truly a great resource for families, missionaries, college kids....and newly weds!

F.U.N.  That is the theme of this darling book!  Made with healthy ingredients, this book will show MANY fun lunches with themes ranging from seasonal, to holidays, to different animals.  Every idea is great!  This super cute book guides you with great instructions, and plenty of pictures, so you will be successful!  Some of the ideas I had never seen or heard of....like shaping a hard boiled egg!  If you use even just a few of the ideas from Happy Bento!, your kids will look forward to lunch!  This would also be a great way to introduce new foods...because they are presented so FUN!  There is a section of "supplies" as well as a "shopping" section at the end. This is a great introductory book for beginners of Bento. Some of my favorite themes were:  Super Mario Brothers, Adventures in Wonderland, Angry Birds, SHARK week, Pi day (Of course....since I am a self proclaimed math nerd!), Halloween, and the Spring box.  These would be super fun to make, and I know any kid would be glad to dive into any of these creations!

Real scripture princesses from all scriptures (BOM, NT, OT, D&C) come to life as you read their story as told from their perspective.  The stories of these 16 women are told in easy to read (think bed time stories) chapters.  (Each of the 16 women have their own chapter).  The end of each story shows the scripture references.  The stories show real women from the scriptures, doing real acts of greatness!  Sometimes its hard to find good role models for girls from the scriptures, because the women are less prominently featured, so this book does a great job at highlighting these important women and all they did.  The author did a great amount of research on the clothing and surroundings to make the drawings accurate...while still leaving a little room for artistic interpretation.

This was a great book for my daughters!  I loved it, they loved it!  It is a new favorite story book!

What a wonderful book that will break down each line and phrase of the Young Woman's theme.  It does a great job explaining the words and meanings of the theme.  You will appreciate the theme even more, after you read the wonderful story of how the theme came to be!!

We Are Daughters of Our Heavenly Father Striving to Live the Young Woman Values gives insight to those who are learning the purpose of the Young Woman's values.  I loved this book so much!   It's a great book, and a definite reread.  I will never think of the young woman's theme the same way again. Jen Brewer wrote a book that is very uplifting and spiritual but may "sting a little". I liked that at the end of each chapter that there was a reflection page that talks about how to get closer to our Heavenly Father personally. It doesn't just talk about the values, but also the context of the rest of the theme. I loved it and I recommend it to any age young woman, parent, and leaders.

Board books are the BEST for wiggly little kids in Sacrament meetings!  This new book; 1,2,3 with Nephi and Me! will be your newest favorite, 'go-to' book!  The pictures are so fun as you count from 1 Liahona to 10 Jaredite kings.  The scripture references are included for each story referenced, so this book would be good for many ages.  I would love to use this in a sharing time or Family Home Evening....Read the book to the Junior Primary, and have the Senior Primary look up each reference!  That way, it is adaptable to many ages.  The illustrations are darling!  Being a board book, it will stand up to the worst chewing, drooling, and just plain enjoying.

Searching for a new "Sacrament Book"?  This fun  book will have your little ones saying "I can Pray" in no time!  It shares many ways we can pray to our Heavenly Father with colorful pictures, and easy words (and the font is large and easy to read).  Children will request this for bedtime stories, Family Home Evening, and Sacrament/ Reverent time.  This is a great tool that we can use to teach little children about prayer!  I plan to use it in my sharing times for Primary!  My 3 daughters gave it 6 thumbs up!

Thai food had been infused into her by Thai street vendors and her Thai mother. She is now back to living in another beautiful little town, but in Utah with her husband and 5 children.

This was my first venture into Thai cooking!  The recipes were quick, and pretty easy to prepare.  There were several ingredients that you find in an Asian store.  (A few of them I wasn't familiar with at all).  Each recipe has a shopping list  at the bottom!  Love it!!! I also liked that many of the recipes had 2 names...the authentic name, and the 'layman's terms' name.

The pictures....OH the pictures!  My goodness!  If you weren't hungry before looking through this, you will be rushing out to the store for ingredients to make them...PRONTO!  There is a picture for each recipe, which will entice you.....each saying "Pick me, Pick me!!" 

Inside, there is a helpful chart explaining the different types of curry.  WHO KNEW!!  Not me!  Followed by many different recipes for curry.  The Khao Pad Moo (Ham Fried Rice) was a big hit!  There were wonderful stir fry recipes...Pad Priew Wan (Sweet & sour chicken), and Asparagus Chicken being the favorites!

This is a fun vacation for your tastebuds!

Book Review: The Assassination of Joseph Smith

About the book:
The Assassination of Joseph Smith is the story of the first president-prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This story begins with Joseph Smith on the plains of northern Missouri in late October 1838. He is thirty-two-years-old and has less than six years to live. This story is written in present-tense form to help the reader feel more engaged with the events and the people who surrounded this distinctive Nineteenth Century figure. There are no fictional characters placed into the story.
The man you will read about in this book is heralded as a prophet by some and held in contempt by others. His name is had for both good and evil. Loyal members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, varied historians, and his most vehement critics, then and now, can at least agree on one thing: Joseph Smith was murdered in cold blood.

After obtaining his Master of Education from Weber State University in 2004, Ryan began writing opinion pieces for Northern Utah newspapers on family, freedom, politics, and religion. Many stories in LDS church history are so well known, the little children can recount them.  There are many famous stories, and some that are not as well known.  In The Assassination of Joseph Smith, we are lead through a journey of Joseph Smiths last 6 years of life.  It is written in chronological order, and filled with stories of persecution and trials that the early Mormons, but most specifically, Joseph Smith and those close to him, had to endure.  It also shares some background information and pictures of some of the main persecutors.

It was interesting to read about the many events that transpired throughout the early church history, and surrounding Joseph Smith.  There was quite a bit of new information that I had either learned, but forgot, or never heard before.  I had no idea that he was poisoned, and threw up so violently that it dislocated his jaw...and that he put it back in himself.  There are lots of stories and tidbits that made my appreciation for Joseph Smith grow.

Whether a member of the LDS faith, or not, this offers interesting insight to this period of time in the 1800's.

Book Review: Callahan Crossroads

Anola Pickett is a Kansas City native, and although she’s lived in Chicago, St. Louis and Massachusetts, she’s always come back home. The oldest of six children, she grew up in a family that emphasized the importance of reading and education. She began writing stories in the third grade and went on to become a teacher and school librarian. Now retired from the classroom, she devotes a big part of her day to writing and research for historical novels for young readers. She especially prizes the stories her parents and grandmother told about their growing-up years in Kansas City.

Pickett enjoys school and library visits to talk about her books and about the craft of writing. She and her husband Peter Doyle enjoy traveling, especially to Hong Kong, where they visit their son and daughter-in-law and a beautiful red-haired granddaughter!

In Callahan Crossroads George takes you on a first person adventure through the time when a world war was raging on but that wasn't the only war. 

There is some one picking on George's neighbor and he is the only one to figure it out with every one worrying about the war.  George is doing all that the priests and nuns are telling the women and children to eat less sugar to give to the solders, eat tons of corn, give old metal to stores to give to the solders but is it actually helping the war?

George would rather be on the the battle field than babysitting his two annoying sisters.

How will George survive?

This book kept me on edge the whole time!

I was curious to know what happened next. Really good to see how people coped with the war.
