A VERY hairy Tale....

I have been growing my hair out for a year or 2.  I suffered all summer with LONG hair...(I survived thanks to my Lilla Rose flexi clips).  I finally got tired of it....SO I GOT IT ALL CUT OFF!

Here is my Before picture:

And here is the after shots:

This is the shortest I have ever had my hair cut.....AND I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!

My dear friend Andrea cut it for me.  She ended up in total taking about 13" off the back and 10.5" every where else.
 Gallon size Ziplock bag.
MY HUGE THICK HAIR....

I was scared to try a new hair cut...but I am so glad I let her talk me into it.  I am donating it to Locks of Love.

So this could be the end of my story.....BUT IT ISN'T!

My mom wanted me to color her hair...but she had been meaning to get her hair cut too....SO she let me cut her hair (Yeah....I don't know that I would trust myself, but that's another story).  So she wanted about 8.5 inches taken off.  The girls and I talked her into taking the 10" off to be able to donate hers too.  So thats what we did.

This is us together with our "tails"

Now this is the end.  :-)

Happy First Day of Home School!

Happy First day of HOME SCHOOL!!!

I always wrap up their school books and supplies and a few other surprises each year and they get to open them on the first day!  Its super fun!!!

I am really excited for the new school year and the new books and subjects we will cover this year!  YAY!!!

My 10 Year Journal

10 Year Journal...do it yourself!

This is a super cute idea to make a 10 year journal!

I don't really take time to write a journal like I used to when I was a teenager (and thought people would care about my crazy drama some day), but I think I can handle writing A SENTENCE a day!

I loved that you could record each day's events in the same place every year.  Then, when writing, you can see the highlights of that day in your history.  I didn't like the thought of the box getting dumped and having to reorganize them all.  So I decided to get a journal instead.  The other nice thing about a journal is that you can record more information each day (more lines and more room).  I thought this was great since my life is SOOO eventful!

Here's how to make one:

I found a journal with 400 pages (200 SHEETS) at Walmart for just under $13.  I picked a nicer one since it will be hanging around for quite a while (10 years!?!)Just make sure your journal has at least 365 pages (one for each day). Journals are tricky...they count the front and back as two separate pages, like a book instead of a notebook.

Now you just stamp or write the date at the top of each page.  Make sure you just write the month and day/date not the year or day of the week. Example = January 1 ( Jan. 01) or March 13 (Mar. 13)  not January 1, 2010 or Saturday, January 1.

I tried to put the date toward the top left corner of each page so that the date on the back of the page wouldn't show through the front.

If you have access to a date stamp (like libraries used in the past) you can easily add your dates. Just make sure you turn the year to the blank space.

Also make sure you add February 29th even though there is no 29th of February this year!

You can also mark special days, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. by writing them at the top of the page.

That's it!  Not too hard and now you can keep a record of your exciting events!

Now I just write the year and the eventfulness of the day.
If this seems like too much work you have 2 other options:
1.  You can download a free PDF 10 year journal that you can punch holes in and place in a binder here.)
2.  You can purchase your own 10+ Year Journal here.

Holidays & days to Celebrate!

I was just sorting through some old mail and papers...good ol' dejunking.  I came across a calendar from The Oriental Trading Co. and was flipping through it.  I figured there was coupons, etc...but something that I noticed when I went to August was that there are funny holidays printed on there as well.  So....Guess what tomorrow is.....Yep...back to (home) school day.  Oh wait.  The REAL holiday printed in the calendar.....its National Tooth Fairy Day!  Yep.  Kinda funny....but none the less true!  So we will be celebrating by going to "The Sweet Tooth Fairy" shop.  Its a super cute bakery close to our house.  I guess it will be our first (of MANY) fieldtrip of the year.  Cake Bites....here I come!

I guess I am just sad I missed National Relaxation Day on the 15th!

I am excited for the first day of school tomorrow.  Lots of fun curriculum and projects!

Give Away: Purex with Zout

I have always been a Purex fan, but I think they have really found another winner!  I tried the Purex with Zout.  It is a laundry detergent AND a pretreater!

It has 3 stain-fighting Enzymes that target different types of stains. (Grass/ blood, Chocolate/ tomato sauce, guar (a thickener in foods like icecream, barbecue sauce and salad dressing))

The nice thing is that you can use it as a pre-treater AND a detergent!  You can use it for your regular laundry as well as REALLY dirty clothes.  (For the really dirty ones, you just pour a little on the stain and rub it into the fabric.  Let it sit for 5 minutes and throw it in the washer!  Voila!)

It comes in 2 options...Morning Burst or Free and Clear.

You can even use it in your High Efficiency washer!  It works for both regular and HE!

I LOVE it when a product can do double duty...It not only saves you from buying 2 products and storing 2 products in the laundry room, but it cuts down the cost too!

I tried the free and clear one and really liked it!  It was able to get out stains I thought would require "special treatment" but I just poured it on, rubbed it in, let it sit and threw it in the washer!  The stain was gone!

YOU CAN WIN A BOTTLE TOO!!!

A Royal (Medieval) Feast...upon the words of Christ activity

Last month for Primary we had a Medieval Feast.  We had everyone come dressed as a king, prince, knight, princess, queen, etc.

One of my super talented counselors made this cute castle.  We took everyone's pictures in front of it.  We got them printed at Costco and gave them each a picture and also made a copy for the bishop so he could have "flash cards" to help him learn the kids names.  We also had the group shot enlarged and we hang it up each Sunday to remind the kids they are Royalty.

We got 3 of the long tables and put them end to end to make a ROYAL banquet table!

I found some inexpensive plastic goblets and filled them with grape juice.  We had candle sticks down the length of the table (didn't light them, of course) for decoration.  We set each place with a "menu."  The menu was all scripture references.  (the menu is listed at the bottom and I can email it to you as a word doc)

We started by having them decorate crowns with royal jewels.

We told the story of putting on the armor of God from  and had one of the young men in the ward be the knight/warrior.

We played a "guess who I am" from the scriptures.  Again, one of my counselors wrote these up.  It was of the kings, knights and queens that are referenced in the scriptures.

Then, we told of Leviathan the "dragon" from the Old Testament (Found in Job 41).  When the story was told, we translated some of the tricky wording...or made it so they knew what they were talking about...(canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? ie.....can you catch him).  So we read the scripture and then explained it in wording they could understand.

We then had them look up the scriptures to figure out what we would have to eat at our royal feast.

I only made some of the food that is on the list.  We had YUMMY food!

Here is the list of "who am I"

Who am I?

I was the king of the Babylonian empire who conquered Judah and the Israelites. I had a dream that I didn’t understand. I called all of the magicians and wise men together to answer my questions about my dream. I told them that if they couldn’t tell me about my dream I would put them to death.  When they couldn’t answer my questions, I sentenced them to death.  Daniel, who had been thrown in the Lion’s den, was one of the wise men. He received a vision from God that answered the questions of my dream. Who Am I?
I am the same king as before. I made a golden image and commanded that all in my kingdom should bow down to it. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego would not bow down to the idol because they had been taught not to worship any thing except gold. I told these men that if they wouldn’t bow down I would throw them into a firey furnace. They still would not bow down so I had my guards throw them into the furnace. When I looked into the fire a saw four men in the fire walking around without injury. An angel saved these men from death.
Nebuchadnezzer

I was the wife of King Ahasuerus. My uncle Mordecai heard of a sort of contest where all the maidens of the land were to be brought before the king. He would choose one for a wife. The king chose me. The king’s servant Haman hates my uncle Mordecai and knows that he is a Jew. He gets the king to make a law that all Jews will be banished from the kingdom. The king did not know that I was a Jew. I went to speak to the king on penalty of death if he didn’t want to see me. I went to see him anyway and won freedom for the Jews and Haman was banished instead.
Esther

I gave an address to the people in the land of Nephi and gathered  them around the temple so they could hear me. Those that were further away were given the words that I spoke in writing. I asked the people to enter into a covenant to keep the commandments of God, and they did. After my address there was continual peace in all the land.
King Benjamin

I fought a Giant with my sling and stones. I struck the Giant down and was eventually made king of Israel. I was a good king, but I made some wrong choices and spent the later end of my life repenting for the bad decisions I had made.
David

I was known as a wise king. Two women who were fighting over a baby brought the baby to me to have me decide who the baby belonged to. I told them to cut the baby in half and each women should receive half. One of the women said to go ahead and cut the baby in half. The other said to give it to the first woman that she would rather the baby live. I knew that this woman was the real mother of the baby.
Solomon

I was the king of a great land. A man was sold to be one of my slaves. When I had a dream about a fat cow and a starving cow I looked all over the land to find someone who could tell me what the dream meant. This man told me that the dream meant I would have seven years of plenty and seven years of famine. Who am I?
Pharoah, Joseph

I was the adopted prince of Egypt for a short time. It was thought that I would eventually become the pharaoh. But when I found out that my true heritage belonged to the slaves that ran the kingdom, I decided to join them instead. I eventually led the children of Israel out of Egypt and to the promised land.
Moses

I was taught by a missionary named Ammon who served me with my flocks for a time. He saved my flocks from being stolen. When he told me about the gospel, I fell over as if dead. My servants and family thought that I was dead and right before they buried me, my wife called for Ammon who told me to rise and I did and told the people all that I knew about the gospel. Many in my kingdom were converted.
Lamoni

My name means princess. I was the wife of Abraham and later in my life I  became the mother of Isaac and the grandmother of Jacob, who would be the father of the 12 tribes of Israel.
Sarah

And here is our MENU (I can email this all formatted with a cool look in a word doc.  I have it with and without the answers) :

GIVE AWAY: Learning Treasures...Round 2!!

I have posted about treasure hunts before.  With a Homeschool St. Patrick's party in my near future, I figured I would give another one away.....Are you feeling LUCKY!? This giveaway will close on 4/13.
I have a dear friend that has created a wonderful line of pre-made treasure hunts.  My kids are EXTREMELY fond of doing treasure hunts and often beg me to make one up for them to do.  It is one of their favorite camping activities (They are usually...find a rock, pinecone, stick, etc).  I am so thankful for these super fun treasure hunts that are all ready to go.  All you have to do is stick them around the room (or the park, primary room, classroom, halls, etc) and make sure you keep the card #1 for you to start it.....and add a "treasure" with the last card.  THAT'S IT!

The cards are printed on nice, heavy cardstock and the graphics are FABULOUS!  Each treasure hunt starts out with a rhyme/ poem that tells them what the next picture card will be.  The last word is left out so the kids can guess the missing rhyming word.  I have used these treasure hunts in our homeschooling parties and they have also been used for primary parties.  The woman who created them is a retired teacher.  There are 10 treasure hunts to choose from!

Check out the website:

http://www.learningtreasures.net

I will be giving one away!!!

If you would like to win one, go to the website and check them out.  Come back and fill out this entry form.  For an extra entry, let me know if you have one you would like to see made.  For another entry, follow my blog.

Purex Complete Crystals Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

Have you tried new Purex Crystals yet?  I just tried it out and I really like it!  My kids like to help with laundry and sometimes forget to add a dryer sheet.  I was glad to find a fabric softener that works best when put in at the beginning of the wash cycle, instead of having to wait for the rinse cycle or dryer.

Purex Complete Crystals Softeners are safe for all laundry and will not harm, wear down or discolor your fabrics like oil-based softeners. It is safe for all fabrics, including baby clothes, athletic wear, towels, and whites. Unlike other softeners, Crystals will:

• Preserve the flame retardant benefits of your children’s clothes
• Retain your athletic wear’s wicking ability which draws sweat away from your body
• Maintain your towels’ built-in ability to absorb water
• Keep your white clothing from yellowing and graying vs. using traditional softeners
The product won’t harm your clothes and is safe and convenient for the entire family!
